A Canton native, Bill Hayden returned home from three years of military service and entered St. Lawrence in the spring of 1946. He went on to become a three letter winner in football as both an offensive and defensive back and was an outstanding wrestler as well.He was undefeated as a 155 pound wrestler for two seasons and was captain his senior year. Also the president of the L Club, he led the wrestling team to a perfect 8-0 season as a junior. He was also one of the leading rushers and a top tackler on the football team.Following graduation, Bill remained in Canton to teach and coach at Canton High School . He coached football, wrestling and track and his junior varsity football team had a 32 meet unbeaten streak. The coach of several sectional titlists, he was twice named Teacher of the Year.
