1988 Wrestling

"The Iron Five" put together an outstanding tournament performance to win the 1988 NCAA Division III championship and become the second team in St. Lawrence history to win an NCAA team title.

St. Lawrence totaled 71 points to record a 4.75 point victory in the team race with five wrestlers matching their point total against teams which had nine and ten entries in the meet. All five Saints earned All America honors, two wrestled in the finals and two more wrestled in the semifinals. They produced one individual national champion, a second place finisher, two third place finishers and a sixth place finish. The five Saint wrestlers went 19-6 in the tournament with five one-point matches and two overtime matches.

Pat Conners followed in the footsteps of his older brother Mike and won the heavyweight national championship. John Canty finished second at 188 while Dan Keating was third at 150 and Kevin Bishop was third at 134 and Brian Read finished sixth at 142 pounds. Saint coach John Clark was named 1988 NCAA Division III Coach of the Year after leading his team to the championship.
